Walking around the historic center of Rome you can not help but come across the masterpieces of baroque art: we give you a few stares not to miss, in your journey through the streets and lanes of the center of the Eternal City, the most famous squares, fountains, churches, palaces of baroque art.
Starting from the marvelous perspective of Piazza di Spagna with the famous Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti, whose feet stand out Fontana della Barcaccia by Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, through Fontana di Trevi, made famous by “La Dolce Vita” by Fellini, continuing in Piazza Montecitorio, to admire Bernini’s façade for the palace that today host the Chamber of Deputies, finally reaching the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola , a wonderful example of baroque painting and pictorial illusionism signed by Andrea Pozzo.
But that’s just a taste!
From the Church of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte with the suggestive white bell tower of Borromini and the two statues of angels attributed to Bernini and his school, to the entire Piazza Navona built on the ruins of the ancient stadium of Domiziano, which still preserves the form, you will live in the baroque Rome!
Only in Piazza Navona we find the beautiful Fountain of the Four Rivers of Bernini and the Church of Sant’Agnese with its beautiful sculptures, not far from the Church of Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza, with the imagination of Borromini spire, and Palazzo Spada, where you can admire his illusionistic perspective. Two of the greatest Italian baroque members can appreciate the architectures on the Quirinale where, beside the other, there are the berniniana Sant’Andrea and the Borromini San Carlo at the Four Fountains. But Bernini is everywhere, beginning with St. Peter’s of course, with the outer colonnade and inside the basilica the famous Baldacchino, St. Peter’s Cathedral and pontifical funerary monuments.
To close this brief overview, if you are passionate about the Baroque period, you absolutely have to visit Galleria Borghese, where some of Bernini’s most famous sculptures and paintings by Caravaggio and Domenichino are kept. By the way, Caravaggio would deserve a whole path from San Luigi dei Francesi to Santa Maria del Popolo, from Capitoline Museums to Galleria Barberini and Galleria Corsini.
